Catalonia has been named the World Region of Gastronomy by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts, and Tourism (IGCAT), making it the first European region to receive this honor. This recognition highlights Catalonia as a global leader in culinary excellence.
Beyond Barcelona and its Mediterranean coastlines, Catalonia’s gastronomy reflects its identity, culture, and history. The region boasts 11 DO wine areas with unique grape varieties like garnacha and macabeo, 5 DO olive oils, and other local specialties such as Alt Urgell i Cerdanya DOP cheese, Lleida pears, Calçot de Valls, Salchichón de Vic, and Pa de Pagès Català.

Catalonia is home to 62 Michelin-starred restaurants, including 5 three-starred restaurants: El Celler de Can Roca (Girona), Torres Brothers Kitchen (Barcelona), Lasarte (Barcelona), ABaC (Barcelona), and Disfrutar (Barcelona). The region also features 6 two-starred restaurants and 51 one-starred restaurants, showcasing a diverse range of culinary excellence.
With IGCAT’s recognition, new projects like gastronomic routes, immersive spaces, food education, and international promotion will be launched, further showcasing Catalan cuisine on the global stage.
