Ribera del Duero is one of the most recognized of all Spanish wine regions. Located just 2 hours north of Madrid, this area contains a number of exceptional wineries, rolling hills and historic castles.
Most of the vineyards occupy both sides of the Duero River, where the soil, altitude, and sharp temperature changes create the perfect growing conditions for the grapes. The varieties grown are Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, and Garnacha Tinta. The resulting wines are full of flavor and complexity. They are medium to full bodied with aromas of red fruits and oak.
One of our favorite wineries in the region is Pago de Carraovejas. This beautiful high-end property has an on-site Michelin star restaurant and tasting room with floor to ceiling windows. They offer a range of visits and tasting options. Don’t miss the large, outdoor terrace with magnificent views of the Peñafiel Castle.
Another notable winery is Finca Villacreces, a real hidden gem. This historic estate is surrounded by pine trees and exudes elegance and charm. Here you can enjoy a guided tour of the winery with a tasting of their best-selling wines. They also have a modern, sophisticated wine bar with an outdoor patio overlooking the vineyards.
The best place to stay in the Ribera del Duero wine region is the Abadía Retuerta Hotel. This luxurious Virtuoso member property is located in a restored ancient monastery. You can dine at their stunning Michelin star restaurant or have a more casual meal at the Vinoteca restaurant. Make sure to take the tour through the vineyards in a 4×4 followed by a picnic and wine tasting!
