Morocco beyond Marrakech

Morocco is a truly enchanting destination, full of history, distinct cultures, beautiful architecture and a variety of landscapes. Marrakesh is the most well-known and connected city for tourism, but there are many other places in the country offering once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Here at Valesa, we’ve been expanding our portfolio of private tours and experiences in Morocco.  Here are a few more incredible sites to visit:

The northeastern city of Fes is referred to as the country’s cultural capital. Founded in the 9th C by Idris I, the city became a center of Islamic learning and culture. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and is considered by scholars to be the last true example of a typical medieval city.  Wander the Fes El Bali walled medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you can see the Chouara Tannery whose traditional leather-making process has remained unchanged for centuries. Also explore the vibrant bazaars around the world’s oldest still functioning university. For Jewish heritage, see the synagogue of Al Fassiyine, restored under the King’s auspices.

Near the Imperial city of Meknes, our visitors enjoy the wine production.  There are several vineyards making prize-winning wines including Chateau Roslane, the first winery in North Africa to be classified as a “Château” and to be protected by the AOC Coteaux de l’Atlas. It is also home to an intimate hotel encircled by luxuriant gardens.

Morocco is mainly a mountainous country, but if you venture south into the vast areas of sand dunes of the Sahara, you will have the experience of a lifetime. The large Erg Chebbi dunes rise to 600 ft above the desert floor. Here you can take our favorite camel ride up the dunes to see the sunset, or for the more adventurous souls, sandboarding is also available.
