The Dão region is located in northern Portugal, just 1.5 hours from Porto. It is still making a name for itself on the world stage.
The Dão vineyards are scattered across a mountainous area which is protected from the Atlantic winds and the soil is mainly granitic lending to more mineral wines. The whites are dry but fruity and the reds are full-bodied and velvety. Some e call this area the Burgundy of Portugal.
One of our favorite wineries is Taboadella. The warm but modern main building is made from oak and cork.
Caminhos Cruzados is another top option, housed in an almost futuristic-looking cement building. They combine traditional winemaking practices with modernity and innovation, offering a large variety of tasting options and experiences.
Be sure to visit Casa de Santar Vinhos, one of the most emblematic winemakers of the region and whose wines are full of history and prestige. It is part of the Paço dos Cunhas estate, built in 1609.
Stay at the recently opened R & C Valverde Santar Hotel & Spa, our absolute favorite, housed in an aristocratic 17th C building surrounded by vineyards and the historical gardens of Santar Vila Jardim.
Nearby is the quaint but enchanting town of Viseu. See the 12th C Cathedral and the Grão Vasco Museum, showcasing works by Vasco Fernandes, Portugal’s finest Renaissance painter. And just in front is the Misericórdia Church with its elegant façade.
