Craft Beer Scene in Spain & Portugal

Although Spain is known for its world class wines, beer is actually the preferred alcoholic drink among Spaniards. It’s perfect for any time of day and is usually associated with informal get-togethers with friends accompanied by good food. The craft beer scene has become increasingly popular in recent years. In Spain, the craft beer market has multiplied by 7 in the last decade alone. In Portugal, the artisan beer scene is small but growing quickly. If you’re looking for interesting and innovative beers to try, here are some noteworthy brands:

Garage Beer Co. is a local legend in Barcelona. Their brewpub is located in a modern, industrial space with 12 taps showcasing their unique and daring beers. They specialize in aromatic and fruity IPAs, as well as dense stouts and sours. They even organize the annual Mash Beer Festival which brings together microbrewers from all over Spain along with street food and music.

Fábrica de Maravillas is a brewpub in the hip neighborhood of Malasaña in Madrid. You can visit the factory and taste a variety of their beers or just enjoy a pint at the bar.

La Pirata Brewing is well-known, well-liked and has won numerous awards. IPAs are their specialty, and you can try them at either their factory in Cataluña or at their new pub in Madrid with 16 taps.

Mad Brewing in Madrid has an urban restaurant and microbrewery on the first floor, and a space for art and cultural events on the second floor. You can taste everything from light lagers to Black IPAs on a factory tour or pair them with the spectacular dishes on their menu.

Hailing from Spain’s northern Basque Country, Basqueland Brewery has really made a name for itself. Founded by two U.S. natives, this company makes beers that have won many medals and prizes over the years, solidifying their name in the sector.

Sovina, made in Porto, is Portugal’s first craft brewery. They make the classics such as lagers, wheat beers, and IPAs as well as a few seasonal specials throughout the year.

Musa is also a notable microbrewer, with multiple urban taprooms throughout Lisbon and Porto. Here you can enjoy their brews along with small plates of food in a fun and relaxed environment.

Other renowned breweries to be on the lookout for are Nómada Brewing, Sesma, Cervezas Arriaca, Cierzo Brewing, La Virgen and Letra.
