Burgos, Spain: Timeless & Historic

Located north of Madrid, this authentic small city is brimming with UNESCO World Heritage sites and medieval architecture, not to be missed. Here are our favorite visits:

Burgos’ most iconic landmark is the Gothic Cathedral of St. Mary, built from 1221 to 1765 and considered one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Spain. Inside, you will see the tomb of El Cid, a famous 11th C military commander.

Next, we stroll through the beautiful old town and admire the colorful façades in the Plaza Mayor as well as the beautiful, tree-lined Espolon promenade. Here we find our favorite meals in Burgos too.

Just outside the city is the Monasterio de las Huelgas Reales, which was founded in 1187 and features a charming Romanesque cloister, the tombs of kings and queens, and also a spectacular Renaissance altarpiece.

Another notable monastery nearby is the Cartuja de Miraflores, built over an ancient royal palace. The detailed, marble mausoleum serves as a final resting place for Juan II and Isabel of Portugal.

Finally, we make sure to visit the archaeological site of Atapuerca, where the earliest man in Europe was discovered from nearly a million years ago.  You’ll learn key aspects of human evolution such as how stone was chipped to make tools, how and why caves were painted, and the necessary hunting skills needed with firing arrows and spears!

Burgos is a special and uncrowded destination to discover true Spanish culture and history, especially since it is now accessible by high-speed train from Madrid in just 1 hour and 40 minutes.
